The Team

Alan Schapker, MD
Dr. Alan Schapker has been in private practice in the Phoenix, Arizona area since 1979, with a special interest in a collaborative practice of obstetrics and gynecology with certified nurse-midwives. He is founder and CEO of Bethany Women's Healthcare, PC, and Bethany Birth Center-the only nationally accredited freestanding birth center in Arizona. His practice is limited to obstetrics/gynecology, infertility, and women's health issues with a special interest in operative laparoscopy.

A Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Dr. Schapker is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He previously served as a commissioned officer for the United States Public Health Service in the capacity of Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Indian Health Service in Claremore, Oklahoma.

Dr. Schapker earned his medical degree from Indiana University and performed his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Joseph's Hospital & Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. He earned his Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Indiana's University of Evansville.

The father of five children, Dr. Schapker has spent much of his free time coaching numerous youth soccer and little league baseball teams over the past 20 years. His community service interests include being the Medical Director for Life Choices Women's Clinic, serving on the Board of Directors for Crisis Pregnancy Center, and volunteering his time at the St. Vincent de Paul Medical Clinic.


Rafael Martin, MD
Dr. Rafael Martin's private practice was in New Mexico from 1981 to 1984. He was the staff obstetrician and gynecologist at Kino Community Hospital in Tucson, Arizona from 1991 until he joined Bethany Women's Healthcare in 2000. Dr. Martin is an official Spanish-English translator, and is also fluent in Portuguese.

Board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Martin earned his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Dr. Martin served in the general medical office, United States Army Medical Corps in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, and performed his residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. He completed his Bachelor of Science while studying at the University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Dr. Martin is the father of three children and thoroughly enjoys computers and jet skiing.


Scott Schapker, MD
Dr. Scott Schapker earned his medical degree from Indiana University and performed his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He received his Bachelor of Arts in biology science education from Benedictine College.

A native Phoenician, Dr. Schapker attended St. Francis Xavier Grade School and Brophy College Prep. He left for 12 years to pursue his education and medical training. He is excited to finally be back in the Valley working in a family-oriented practice. Dr. Schapker is also fluent in Spanish.

Dr. Schapker is an avid mountain-biker and novice tri-athlete. When not on a bicycle, he spends much of his free time with his golden retriever, Jesse.


Connie Garcia
Connie Garcia earned her BSN in nursing and MSN in midwifery from Case Western Reserve University and the Community-based Nurse-Midwifery Education Program at the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing, respectively.

Connie is a native of Michigan. She is married and the mother of five children, ages 12 to 22. She is interested in vocal music and spends her free time playing the piano and participating in leading worship at her home church. She is a commissioner and site visitor for the Commission for Accreditation of Birth Centers, and strongly believes in the importance of providing a birth center experience to all those who desire it. Connie is bilingual in English and Spanish.


Jeanene Traynor-Wilson, CNP
Jeanene is a Certified Womans Health Nurse Practitioner earning her certification from the University of Phoenix, and nationally certified through the National Certification Corporation. She worked as an RN from 1980 to 1999 in labor & delivery, postpartum, and operating suites. Since that time, she has worked as a Certified Womans Health Nurse Practitioner performing OB exams, well woman exams, including endometrial biopsies, skin biopsies, STD screening, urinary tract infections, and all other gyn related evaluations. She has also worked as a high risk OB case manager.


Lynnette Moser Casey, CNM
Lynnette has been working as a midwife wince 1997. Before joining Bethany Women’s Health Center in 2000, she worked at a freestanding Birth Center in Chapel Hill, NC.

Lynnette’s interest and love for midwifery is very personal, dating to prenatal care provided by a CNM while she was pregnant with her first child. Her goal as a midwife is to make birth a personal rather than technical experience for women and their families.

Lynnette’s professional experience includes eight years as a labor and delivery RN and Perinatal Educator. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a Masters of Science degree in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, OH).

Lynnette was born in central Minnesota and grew up on a family dairy farm, one of seven children. She has three children of her own, ages 23, 20, and 11 and has been married for 24 years to a journalist. His many job changes and transfers have kept the family on the move with stops in Iowa, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Charlotte, Dayton, Raleigh and now Phoenix, where she plans to stay forever. She loves to cook, hike with her two dogs, and read.


Donna Tash, CNM
Donna earned her B.S. in Nursing from Pennsylvania State University in 1974 and her interest in midwifery began when she was pregnant with her first child in 1975. She became a Licensed Midwife in 1978 and earned her Certificate in Nurse-Midwifery from the University of Arizona in 1982. In 1993, Donna completed her Masters of Science from Arizona State University.

Donna was the first CNM in the East Valley and had a private practice for 18 years. Her practice was merged with Bethany Woman’s Health Care in 2001. She is very pleased to finally have a birth center available for deliveries.

Her outside interests includes aerobics, hiking & vegetarian cooking, especially in her solar oven. In addition to her family, Donna enjoys spending quality time with Benson, her beloved Basset Hound.


Sylvia Pena Hayashi, RN, MSN, WHCNP
Sylvia is a Woman's Health Care Nurse Practitioner, earning her certification from the University of Phoenix. Sylvia's nursing career began as a Certified Medical assistant and went forward to be a Licensed Practical Nurse to a Register Nurse and finally obtaining a Masters of Science in Nursing with a certification as a Woman's Health Care Nurse Practitioner. Sylvia worked as an Intensive Care Unit Nurse for fourteen years and the last ten years as a Nurse Practitioner. Sylvia's goals have always been to tailor individual Western medicine with alternative Eastern medicine.

Sylvia was born in San Antonio, Texas. She is bilingual, married, has one son, seven pets and a certified Yoga Instructor. She loves to read, especially the Bible, loves animals, loves to travel, play golf, workout, and teach Yoga. Her many travels have included several cities in the United States, Alaska, Japan, Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, and India.


Tricia Romo, MSN, CNM
Tricia earned her post Masters Certificate in Nurse Midwifery from the University of Utah in 1999. She has been involved in women's healthcare for over twenty-five years as a registered nurse, childbirth educator and nurse educator. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona and a Masters for the University of New Mexico. She is a co author of the book Essentials in Fetal Monitoring.

Tricia's interest in midwifery began as she desired to deliver specialized care for women in a kind and caring manner. During the last eight years she has welcomed over a 1,000 babies into her arms. She is very interested in delivering culturally sensitive care and frequently asks her patients to describe what their ideal birth experience is like. Tricia is bilingual in English and Spanish.

Her outside interests surround her family. As a mother of four children she is true to fact testimate that each child is a different experience. Having had high risk pregnancies is always interested in safe alternatives in care such as vaginal delivery after cesarean. She loves gardening, interior and reading.
